Packing Guide
Weight Distribution
  • Do not pack your items in a manner that creates excessively heavy boxes (e.g. don't pack your books in a large box; instead, use two small boxes). If you have trouble lifting the box, so will the student employees of BRSS!
  • Boxes that weigh over 70lbs incur additional charges. As a result, distributing weight accordingly will reduce risk of damage and save you money.
Securing and Padding
  • Use "double walled" boxes if at all possible. Double walled boxes are sturdier and more robust than others types of boxes. (BRSS boxes are double walled).
  • Pad fragile items with towels, clothing, bedding, or bubble wrap on all sides.
  • Fill boxes as completely as possible so that items don't shift when the box is handled.
  • Tape both ends of boxes extensively with several strips across the center gap and two strips covering the seams at the top and bottom.
  • Extra large TV boxes should only be used for televisions and oversized items that do not fit in any other size box.
How do I store ...

Plastic Storage Bins/Drawers
  • Tape shut any plastic drawers or containers so they do not come open in storage
  • Remove casters/wheels from plastic storage drawers
Trunks/Footlockers
  • These items do not go into a box. Secure them with a lock if possible.
Books
  • Do not consolidate all of your books in one large box
  • Use our small box (12x12x12) to store them efficiently
Refrigerators
  • These items do not go into a box. Be sure to unplug the fridge at least 48 hours in advance of your appointment in order to allow for the defrosting process.
Carpets
  • Roll up tightly and secure thoroughly with packing tape
Lamps
  • Small lamps should be placed into boxes and padded with soft-goods or bubble wrap
  • Large lamps that do not fit into boxes can be stored "as is." Be sure to remove the light bulb.
Luggage
  • These items do not go into a box. If possible, attach a luggage tag with your identification information (i.e., name and phone #)
Electronics
  • If possible, these items should be stored in the original manufacturer's packaging
  • If you don't have the original packaging, tightly secure all electronics in a double-walled box (BRSS boxes are double-walled)
  • Use soft-goods (towels, sheets, sweater, etc.) or bubble wrap to ensure sufficient padding
  • Label all boxes containing electronics "Fragile Electronics"
Fans
  • Small and medium sized fans should be packed in boxes with sufficient padding
  • Box fans and large stand-up fans can be stored "as is"
  • Please secure all power cords with tape
Desks & Furniture
  • Make sure that all drawers/shelves are empty
  • Close all drawers/openings and secure with packing tape
  • Remember, BRSS cannot store assembled particle board furniture. Particle board furniture is not built to be moved from point to point (without first being disassembled and placed into boxes).
What you shouldn't ship or store ...

Please do not ship or store the following with BRSS because we do not insure them against loss or damage:
  • Items of intangible value
  • Items of an "appraised value" (i.e., jewelry, antiques, valuables, heirlooms, etc.)
  • Cash or cash equivalent
  • Live animals and animal containers (cages, tanks, etc.)
  • Particle-board furniture
  • Liquids
  • Extremely fragile items, such as mirrors
  • Improperly packed items
